Shoesalder Guide
Practical advice for choosing, fitting and caring for your shoes.
1. Find your size
Measure your feet in the afternoon or evening, when they are at their largest, and wearing the socks you plan to wear with the shoes. Measure both feet and use the longer measurement. Then compare it with the size chart on the product page, because sizes vary between styles and charts may use UK, US or EU sizes. Our Size Guide explains how to measure step by step.
2. Choose the right shoe for the day
- Everyday walking and errands: lightweight walking shoes and trainers with cushioned soles.
- Work and smart-casual: loafers and flats or Chelsea boots that go with trousers and tailoring.
- Autumn: ankle boots work with jeans, trousers, skirts and dresses.
- Winter: lined snow and winter boots with textured, non-slip soles for cold, wet days.
- Summer and holidays: sandals and slides and flip-flops.
- At home: slippers.
3. Try them on the right way
When your shoes arrive, try them on indoors on a clean, soft surface. Walk around, check there's a little room in front of your longest toe, and make sure the heel doesn't slip. Keep the tags and packaging until you're sure. Returns must be unworn and in their original condition (see our Refund Policy).
4. Care for your shoes
- Suede and nubuck: brush off dirt when dry with a suede brush, and treat with a protector spray before wearing in wet weather. Avoid soaking.
- Leather and faux leather: wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Condition real leather occasionally to keep it supple.
- Mesh and knit: remove surface dirt with a soft brush, clean with cold water and mild soap, and let them air dry. Don't tumble dry.
- Faux-fur and plush linings: spot clean and let them dry naturally at room temperature, away from radiators.
- Wet shoes: stuff them with paper and let them dry slowly away from direct heat, which can crack materials and weaken glue.
